Bandaibashi Bridge, a symbol of Niigata, spans the Shinano River. This historic bridge, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, boasts a charming blend of modern design and structure.
Bandaibashi Bridge gracefully arches over the Shinano River, flowing through the heart of Niigata City. Beloved as a symbol of the city, its story spans generations. The original bridge, constructed in 1886 (Meiji 19), tragically succumbed to a great fire in 1908 (Meiji 41). A second bridge followed, only to be replaced by the current third iteration in 1929 (Showa 4). This present-day structure is a reinforced concrete six-arch bridge, measuring 306.9 meters long and 22 meters wide. It features four lanes of traffic (two lanes in each direction) and dedicated sidewalks. At either end of the bridge are plaza areas perfect for relaxing and enjoying the stunning views. Bandaibashi Bridge stands as a testament to Niigata's growth, attracting numerous visitors and serving as a popular spot. From the bridge, you can enjoy a panoramic vista of the flowing Shinano River and the city's cityscape—especially breathtaking at sunset. The bridge is also conveniently located near Niigata Station and Bandai City, offering easy access to numerous commercial facilities and tourist attractions, making it a great place to spend the day.
