Beyond the beckoning cats, the temple grounds offer many other captivating sights. Take your time to stroll through the beautiful three-storied pagoda and serene gardens.
Daikiozan Gotokuji Temple is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple located in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo. Known as the birthplace of the beckoning cat, the temple grounds are filled with beckoning cats in various forms. The belief in beckoning cats is said to have originated in the Edo period when Gyusen Oshou, the temple's chief priest, rescued a sick cat, leading to a reverence for cats.
One day, Gyusen Oshou found a weak, sick cat and cared for it at the temple. Thanks to the priest's kind care, the cat recovered and remained by his side. Impressed by the cat's repayment of kindness and loyalty, Oshou came to revere cats as sacred animals.
Gotokuji Temple also houses numerous historical sites related to cats, such as the "Nekozuka" (cat mound) where Gyusen Oshou buried the cat, and the "Nekukouyouto" (cat memorial stupa).
Beyond the beckoning cats, Gotokuji also offers many other attractions. Why not take your time strolling through the beautiful three-storied pagoda and serene gardens?
Gotokuji Temple is a popular spot attracting many visitors, both cat lovers and those seeking the good fortune associated with beckoning cats. It's the perfect place to unwind and find peace away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
