Overview

Hie Shrine is located in Nagatacho, in the heart of Tokyo. Founded approximately 1300 years ago during the Heian period, it has long been a place of worship, believed to offer various blessings. The principal deity of Hie Shrine is Ooyamakuikami, a mountain god and protector of the land. Therefore, Hie Shrine is said to grant a wide range of wishes, including matchmaking, protection from misfortune, safe childbirth, and business prosperity. Even amidst the bustling city, Hie Shrine offers a tranquil and verdant sanctuary. It's the perfect place for those seeking a respite from the urban hustle and a chance to refresh their mind and body. Within the grounds, you'll find charming statues of sacred monkeys (Masaru), bringing smiles to many visitors. These monkeys are a symbolic presence at Hie Shrine, believed to protect people from harm. Various events and festivals are also held at Hie Shrine. For example, the Sanno Matsuri, held annually in May, is Hie Shrine's largest festival, featuring lively stalls and a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession. Hie Shrine maintains its age-old traditions while nestled within a modern city. Be sure to visit!
