Overview

Jindaiji Temple is a distinguished branch temple of the Tendai sect located in Chofu City, Tokyo. Legend says it was founded in 733 (Tenpyo 5) by Monk Mankō, making it one of Tokyo's oldest temples, second only to Senso-ji Temple. Jindaiji is renowned for enshrining Ji-e Daishi (also known as Gan-zan Daishi), the deity known for warding off evil. It's also famous as the birthplace of Jindaiji soba noodles. These thick, chewy noodles originated at the temple gates during the Edo period, and today, many soba restaurants line the streets around Jindaiji. The temple offers a tranquil escape surrounded by lush greenery, making it a popular spot for relaxation away from the city's hustle and bustle. The temple grounds house numerous historically significant buildings including the main hall, Gan-zan Daishi Hall, the founder's hall, bell tower, Shaka Hall, mountain gate, Shinsha Hall, and Fudo Hall. The temple also hosts many events, such as the Jindaiji Daruma Market (March 3rd-4th) and the Jindaiji Chochin Festival (mid-July). Jindaiji is a captivating destination that offers history, culture, nature, and fantastic food.
