Its distinctive building, designed by Tadao Ando, and its exhibitions focusing on contemporary Japanese design are major draws.
Overview
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a design museum that opened in Tokyo Midtown in 2007. Designed by architect Tadao Ando, the building features a subterranean level that accounts for approximately 80% of the floor space, creating a surprisingly voluminous interior unseen from the ground. Its iconic single-plate steel symbol, referred to as a "product logo," represents 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT as a 'place' for design. By using imagery that we unconsciously see in our daily lives, the museum expresses its concept of drawing out the potential hidden in everyday life through design. The museum houses three galleries – Gallery 1&2 and Gallery 3 – hosting diverse design-related exhibitions. A shop offers design-related books and merchandise. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT aims to foster understanding and interest in design among designers, engineers, craftspeople, companies, and the general public. It frequently holds exhibitions themed around "everyday life," revealing new discoveries and possibilities within daily routines. Design makes life enjoyable, enriching it and expanding the possibilities of thought and action. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a hub for discovering and creating the future of design as a culture. Come visit and experience the wonder of design!
