A group of over 30 lakes and ponds of varying sizes, formed by the eruption of Mount Bandai. Admire the beautiful, contrasting hues, including the emerald green of Aonuma (Blue Pond).
The Goshikinuma Pond Group is a collection of over 30 small lakes and ponds located in Kitashiobara Village, Yama District, Fukushima Prefecture. They were formed on July 15, 1888 (Meiji 21), after the eruption of Mount Bandai caused a massive collapse of the mountain, and resulting debris flows dammed a river. Each pond displays a variety of colors—green, red, blue, and more—due to differences in water depth, quality, and the presence of phytoplankton, leading to the name "Goshikinuma" (Five-Colored Ponds). Among them, Aonuma (Blue Pond), with its vibrant emerald green, is a particularly popular spot. This stunning color is a result of the reflection of light off the mineral content in the water and volcanic ash at the bottom. A roughly 4km-long walking trail allows visitors to explore the ponds of various colors and enjoy the magnificent views of Mount Bandai. The trail is relatively flat and easy to walk, making it suitable for beginners. It's also a treat to experience the changing seasonal scenery: fresh spring greenery, lush summer foliage, and autumn's vibrant foliage. Designated as part of the Bandai-Asahi National Park, the Goshikinuma Pond Group is surrounded by a wealth of tourist facilities including onsen (hot springs), ski resorts, and accommodations. It's a great base for exploring the Urabandai area.
