Japan's largest ginkgo tree, boasting an age of over 1000 years, a height of approximately 31 meters, and a trunk circumference of approximately 22 meters.
Kitakanezawa's Great Ginkgo Tree stands majestically on a terrace cliff just inland from the northern coastal area of Fukaura Town, Aomori Prefecture. Over 1000 years old, approximately 31 meters tall, and with a trunk circumference of about 22 meters, its sheer size is breathtaking. Known as Japan's largest ginkgo, it's designated a national natural monument. This ginkgo has long been revered as a sacred tree. The aerial roots hanging from its trunk resemble human breasts or stalactites, and legend says touching them improves breast milk production. Therefore, it's also called "Tarachine no Ichō" (literally, "Ginkgo of the Drooping Breast"), and has been an object of faith for women struggling with lactation. Until around the 1970s, women with breastfeeding difficulties from as far as Hokkaido and Akita Prefecture would visit to make wishes, offering rice and sake to the aerial roots. From the fresh green of spring, the lush green of summer, to the vibrant autumn foliage, the Great Ginkgo displays various stunning appearances throughout the year, inspiring awe with each visit. Especially during the autumn foliage season, the golden leaves cover the entire tree, enveloping the surroundings in a magical atmosphere. Nighttime illuminations reveal yet another facet of its beauty. Kitakanezawa's Great Ginkgo is a precious spot where you can experience the rich natural beauty and history of Fukaura Town. Come and witness its grandeur for yourself.
