Get up close and personal with brown bears!
Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch is a zoo established in 1943 by local residents to protect bears, coinciding with the birth of Showa Shinzan. Today, it houses approximately 70 brown bears (Higuma). The facility features a concrete 'human cage' allowing visitors to observe the bears through glass. The cage is well-ventilated, offering incredibly close observation – you can almost feel their breath! This provides a truly awe-inspiring encounter with these magnificent creatures. The ranch also includes an exhibit area to learn about bear ecology and a hands-on feeding experience. Visitors can purchase cookies from a vending machine and feed the bears directly, providing an unforgettable experience as you witness their size and feeding habits up close. Furthermore, a Kuma Shrine (Bear Shrine) is located on the grounds, encouraging appreciation and respect for bears. Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch isn't just a place to observe brown bears; it's a place to learn about them and consider human-bear coexistence.
