A vast campus brimming with Hokkaido's history and greenery.
Hokkaido University opened its doors in 1876 (Meiji 9) as Sapporo Agricultural College. Dr. William S. Clark, its founder, is famously known for his words, "Boys, be ambitious!" The university boasts a rich history, significantly contributing not only to the field of agriculture but also to the development of Hokkaido. The campus, built on the former site of Sapporo Agricultural College, features many historical buildings. Furkawa Hall, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, is particularly evocative of this history. The Faculty of Agriculture building, dating back to the Meiji period, is also a must-see. Beyond the historical structures, the campus offers beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons, with photogenic spots like the poplar and ginkgo tree-lined avenues. Numerous cafes and restaurants provide relaxing spaces to unwind, and a souvenir shop offers university-themed goods to take home as a memento. Hokkaido University, a place where history and nature intertwine, is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Sapporo.
