Experience the traditional performing arts of Gion Kobu; witness the splendor of Kyomai (Kyoto-style dance) and gagaku (ancient Japanese court music).
Gion Kobu Kaburenjo is a historic theater that has preserved and developed the traditional performing arts of Gion Kobu, Kyoto's renowned geisha district. Gion Kobu flourished from the Kan'ei era as a town in front of Yasaka Shrine. The Kaburenjo was built in the Meiji era as a practice space for the geiko of Gion Kobu. Today, it hosts the "Miyako Odori" in spring and the "On-shu-kai" in autumn, offering precious opportunities to appreciate dazzling Kyomai, gagaku, kyogen (farcical drama), and other traditional arts. The "Miyako Odori" is a magnificent performance showcasing the culmination of a year's efforts by the Gion Kobu geiko. The "On-shu-kai," on the other hand, is a more traditional performance where the geiko present the results of their daily practice. Both performances offer excellent opportunities to fully experience the splendor and traditional beauty unique to Gion Kobu Kaburenjo. Furthermore, Gion Kobu Kaburenjo actively promotes Kyoto's traditional performing arts, including the Kyomai Inoue-ryu school, making significant contributions to the preservation and development of these traditions. Gion Kobu Kaburenjo is a place where you can tangibly feel the history and culture of Gion Kobu. Be sure to visit when you're in Kyoto.
