Pontocho

Overview

Pontocho is a *hanamachi* (geisha district) that stretches along the Kamogawa River, known as one of Kyoto's most picturesque and atmospheric locations. Its history is rich, flourishing as a noble's villa area during the Heian period and later developing as a *yūkaku* (brothel district) during the Edo period. It subsequently evolved into a thriving *hanamachi*, and many geiko and maiko still grace its streets today.
