Kannonshoji Temple offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Omi Plain and is associated with Prince Shotoku. Experience history and nature at its finest.
Kannonshoji Temple, located in Ishijidera, Azuchi-cho, Omihachiman City, is the 32nd temple on the Saigoku Sanjusan Kannon pilgrimage route. Tradition holds that it was founded by Prince Shotoku, and its principal image is the Senju Sengen Kannon Bosatsu (Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva). Situated atop Kinugasayama mountain, it boasts stunning views of the Omi Plain. There are two approaches to the temple: the main approach (omisen-michi) is a steep path with stone steps offering spectacular views, while the back approach (urasen-michi) is a gentler forest road for a more leisurely climb. The approach is lined with stonework and stone monuments, evoking a sense of history. The stonework tells the story of the lives of the people who once inhabited this area. The stone monuments bear inscriptions detailing the temple's history and the accomplishments of Prince Shotoku. The main hall at the summit is a wooden structure, exuding a dignified presence. Inside, the Senju Sengen Kannon Bosatsu is enshrined, its majestic form awe-inspiring. Near the main hall, you'll find the Benzaiten Shrine dedicated to Benzaiten (goddess of music, arts, eloquence and water) and a bell tower. Kannonshoji Temple is a highly recommended sightseeing spot where you can fully appreciate both history and nature. Be sure to visit!
