Overview

Hōgon-ji Temple is the 30th temple on the Saigoku Sanjusankannon pilgrimage route, located on Chikubu Island in Lake Biwa. Known as a temple dedicated to Benzaiten, it has been a center of faith since ancient times. The main hall is called the Benzaitendo, and a beautifully carved Karamon gate welcomes visitors. The temple grounds boast numerous precious cultural properties, including the national treasure Karamon gate, a stone five-storied pagoda, and the Kannon-do hall, an important cultural property. The Karamon gate is particularly renowned for its splendor and intricate carvings. Dragons and phoenixes, auspicious symbols, are carved into the vermillion pillars and beams, showcasing stunning artistry. The stone five-storied pagoda, built in the Kamakura period, is a symbol of Chikubu Island. In addition to Benzaiten, Hōgon-ji Temple also enshrines Buddhist statues such as Yakushi Nyorai, Fudo Myoo, and Jizo Bosatsu. These statues are believed to grant wishes and are objects of deep faith for many worshippers. The temple grounds also feature a beautiful garden.
