Nagao Tsurugi Jinja Shrine, located in Shiranuhi-cho, Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a renowned tourist spot famous for its torii gate that appears to float on the sea. Founded in 713 (Wadō 6), it boasts a long and rich history. The enshrined deity is Watatsumi no Kami (god of the sea), believed to offer blessings for digestive health.
The shrine's name originates from a legend where Watatsumi no Kami appeared on a large stingray, its tail resembling a sword, thus leading to the name "Nagao Tsurugi Jinja" (Nagao Sword Shrine).
The main attraction is undoubtedly the sea-floating torii gate. Its appearance changes with the tide, offering a unique view each time you visit. Sunset provides an especially enchanting scene, creating a magical atmosphere with the torii and the setting sun.
Nagao Tsurugi Jinja is also known as a location where the Shiranuhi (Shiranuhi mirage) phenomenon can be observed. Shiranuhi is a mirage that appears on the Yatsushiro Sea (Shiranuhi Sea) at dawn on the first day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar (Hassaku). This rare phenomenon occurs under specific topographical and meteorological conditions, making it a truly special sight. Many people visit annually hoping to witness this spectacle.
Nagao Tsurugi Jinja is a place steeped in history, natural beauty, and mystical charm. We highly recommend a visit.
