Akiyoshidai International Art Village is a multifaceted cultural facility nestled at the foot of the majestic Akiyosidai karst plateau.
Akiyoshidai International Art Village is a multifaceted cultural facility opened in Akiyoshi-cho, Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, as a globally-oriented hub for the creation and dissemination of arts and culture. Located at the eastern foot of Akiyosidai, Japan's largest karst plateau, its design takes full advantage of the valley's mountainous surroundings. The site, a quiet, enclosed valley on the south-facing slope of a low hill adjacent to the karst plateau, was specifically chosen to provide artists with a tranquil environment away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, allowing them to fully concentrate on their creative work. Akiyoshidai International Art Village supports the creative activities of artists from Japan and abroad, primarily focusing on contemporary music and artist-in-residence programs. In addition to artist-in-residence programs and seminars/workshops, the village also offers collaborative programs with related organizations domestically and internationally, locally-focused programs, and exchange programs between resident artists and the local community. The facilities are not limited to artists; they are also available to the general public, including professionals and students. In addition to artist-in-residence programs, the on-site accommodation is used for school club retreats, school trips, and other group stays. Recently, it has also been opened to tourists visiting Akiyosidai and Akiyoshido Cave at affordable rates. The village was designed by world-renowned architect Kisho Kurokawa. The complex includes a hall with seating for approximately 300 people, a restaurant, a seminar room, practice studios, a gallery, a cafeteria, and accommodation for up to 100 people. Limestone (marble) is extensively used in the construction, reflecting Akiyosidai's karst landscape. The buildings are arranged as a collection of small structures, reminiscent of a traditional Japanese village. Akiyoshidai International Art Village offers a truly creative space where contemporary music, artist-in-residence programs, the abundant natural beauty of the Akiyosidai karst plateau, and distinctive architecture harmoniously coexist. It's a captivating destination not just for art enthusiasts, but also for nature lovers and architecture aficionados. Come experience the blend of art, nature, and history at Akiyoshidai International Art Village.
