Sokyō-ji Temple is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple of the Daitoku-ji school located in Higashijō, Izushi-chō, Toyooka City, Hyōgo Prefecture.
Its mountain name is Engaku-zan, and it's known as the family temple of the lords of Izushi Castle.
Also known as Sōan-dera (Takuan Temple), it's famous for its connection to Sōan Oshō, renowned as the inventor of takuan pickles.
Sōan Oshō, born in Izushi Castle town, was a highly respected priest beloved by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. However, he did not seek advancement and spent his later years in his hometown, devoting much of his time to Sokyō-ji Temple.
Within Sokyō-ji Temple, you'll find the "Crane and Tortoise Garden," said to be designed by Sōan Oshō, and "Tōenken," where he resided for eight years from the age of 48.
The "Crane and Tortoise Garden" is a pond garden where the shape of the pond is designed to resemble a crane, with a tortoise island in its center. It is designated as an important cultural property of the prefecture.
This is a place where you can feel the footsteps of Sōan Oshō in the serene atmosphere and spend time quietly reflecting on yourself.
Sokyō-ji Temple is also located within Izushi Castle town, a place where history and culture thrive.
Many fascinating sightseeing spots exist, including Izushi Castle and Izushi Eirakukan. Be sure to visit Sokyō-ji Temple and experience the tranquility and history of Izushi Castle town.
