A nationally unique shrine, Tosayama Shrine is adorned entirely with Arita ware, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of its porcelain torii gate and komainu (lion-dog statues).
Overview
Tosayama Shrine, located in Arita-cho, Saga Prefecture, is dedicated to Ri Sampei, the founder of Arita ware, and Nabeshima Naoshige. It is revered by many as the "god of Arita ware's origins," protecting the prosperity of Arita ware and the happiness of the townspeople.
The shrine grounds are adorned with beautiful decorations crafted using the techniques of Arita ware, including a porcelain torii gate, komainu, and lanterns—creating an atmosphere akin to an open-air museum. A unique feature is the JR Sasebo Line train that passes directly by the shrine's approach, offering a truly distinctive view of Arita's unique blend of tradition and modern life. Watching the train pass is a truly memorable aspect of visiting this Arita ware town.
Tosayama Shrine offers a precious opportunity to experience the history and culture of Arita ware. Why not spend a relaxing time surrounded by beautiful scenery? Several types of goshuin (temple seals) are available, including limited editions, so be sure to get one as a souvenir!
