Overview

Ryūhyōzaki Cape is a cape jutting into the Tsugaru Strait, located in Misawa, Higashitsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. Situated at the northernmost tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula, it's said to have earned its name from the strong winds that have historically swept through, strong enough to be described as 'dragons flying'. Ryūhyōzaki offers a captivating blend of stunning natural beauty and rich history. Its most captivating feature is undoubtedly the breathtaking views of the Tsugaru Strait. On a clear day, a magnificent panorama unfolds, stretching as far as Hokkaido, a sight of awe-inspiring beauty. The Ryūhyōzaki Lighthouse, a striking white structure standing proudly at the cape's tip, plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of ships navigating the strait. A well-maintained walking path around the lighthouse allows visitors to leisurely stroll and fully immerse themselves in the grandeur of the ocean scenery. Ryūhyōzaki holds significant meaning as a place associated with the literary giant Osamu Dazai and the woodblock print artist Shikō Munakata. Dazai visited Ryūhyōzaki in 1936, deeply moved by its majestic scenery and immortalizing the experience in his work, Tsugaru. The former Okuya Ryokan, where Dazai stayed with friends, has been renovated and now serves as the "Ryūhyōzaki Cape Tourist Information Center, Ryūhīkan," with a reconstruction of Dazai's room. Furthermore, Ryūhyōzaki boasts an array of attractions, including the Seikan Tunnel Memorial Museum and the Stairway National Road. The Seikan Tunnel Memorial Museum offers insights into the history and technology behind the Seikan Tunnel, the world's longest undersea tunnel. The Stairway National Road, carved along a steep cliff, was once accessible only on foot. While now passable by car, its name persists due to the stairs separating the roadway from the pedestrian walkway. Ryūhyōzaki is a must-visit tourist spot that offers a unique blend of nature and history. We encourage you to explore its wonders.
