Overview
The Erisan rice terraces in Ogi City, Saga Prefecture, are a scenic spot featuring approximately 600 terraced rice paddies, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces. Located on the mid-slope of the Tenzan mountain range at an altitude of 250 meters, these rice paddies captivate many tourists with their beautiful scenery.
This location has received numerous prestigious designations: Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 1999), Japan's Top 100 Rural Landscapes (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 1991), Saga Prefecture Heritage for the 22nd Century (Saga Prefecture, 2008), and Connecting Rice Paddy Heritage - Passing Down the Pride of Our Hometown to the Future (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 2022). This recognition underscores the beauty, historical significance, and cultural importance of the landscape.
From mid-September to late September, spider lilies bloom along the rice paddy embankments. Their vivid red color creates a striking contrast with the golden color of the rice ears, soothing the hearts of visitors. The brilliant red of the spider lilies against the blue sky creates a picturesque scene—a truly breathtaking view. Photography enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities to capture stunning images.
Erisan's rice terraces are not merely a scenic area; they are a cherished place that has nurtured the lives and culture of the people. While gazing upon the rice terraces, consider the hardships and ingenuity of the people of the past, and contemplate the importance of coexistence between nature and humanity.
In recent years, wire mesh fences have been installed to protect against harmful wildlife, but the magnificent landscape continues to inspire awe in many people.
