Tanohara Marsh is a marsh located at an altitude of 1610 meters in Shiga Kogen, Nagano Prefecture. Surrounding it is a birch forest, and in summer, the area is ablaze with color from alpine plants such as Japanese cotton grass (watasuge) and day lilies (nikkokisuge). Well-maintained boardwalks make it easy to walk, making it safe and enjoyable even for families with young children. A bench is situated in the center of the marsh, providing a perfect spot to rest and enjoy the view.
Tanohara Marsh is particularly easy to access within Shiga Kogen, making it a convenient stop.
Other natural spots, including Kidoike Pond and the Forty-eight Ponds, are scattered around the marsh, allowing for a relaxing day of exploration. Kidoike Pond, located very close to Tanohara Marsh, is a serene and beautiful pond. The reflection of the birch forest in the still water is a truly breathtaking sight. The Forty-eight Ponds is a mystical marsh with approximately sixty small and large ponds scattered throughout, each teeming with various plant life, showcasing the richness of the natural environment.
