Kami-Daigo: the birthplace of Daigo-ji Temple. Experience the rich nature and history, and spend a peaceful time.
Kami-Daigo is a particularly serene and special area within Daigo-ji Temple. Approximately a one-hour climb up a mountain path from Shimo-Daigo, it's a place to refresh your mind and body, surrounded by abundant nature. In 874, Shobo Riyu Daishi, the founder of Daigo-ji Temple, built a hermitage here, making Kami-Daigo the origin point of Daigo-ji's history. Daishi named the clear spring water found here "Daigo-sui," believing it purified the mind and body. This spring water, still flowing along the mountain path today, can be tasted. Historical structures dot Kami-Daigo, including the Kaisan-do and Nyoirin-do halls, each telling a part of Daigo-ji's history and culture. The Kaisan-do Hall enshrines Shobo Daishi and was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Nyoirin-do Hall houses a Juntei Kannon statue carved by Shobo Daishi himself; its exquisite carvings are a must-see. From Kami-Daigo, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Osaka's cityscape and Osaka Castle. If you're lucky, you might even see the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge. Kami-Daigo is a special area within Daigo-ji Temple where you can fully enjoy historical romance and magnificent nature. Be sure to visit!
