INFO
The grounds are extensive, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. There are also restaurants and rest areas, so those who want to take their time can bring a packed lunch.
Daigoji Temple was founded in 874 during the early Heian period by Ryo-gen Daishi Shobo, a great-grand disciple of Kukai. Later, during the Muromachi period, it flourished under the patronage of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The temple grounds are vast, divided into lower Daigo (Shimo Daigo) and upper Daigo (Kami Daigo). Shimo Daigo houses important structures such as the National Treasure five-storied pagoda, the Golden Hall (Kondō), and the Karamon gate, while Kami Daigo features the Sanboin Garden and more.
Daigoji is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, boasting beautiful cherry blossoms in spring and stunning autumn foliage. The Sanboin Garden, in particular, is a masterpiece of the chisen-kaiyu-shiki (pond-style stroll) garden design, offering captivating views throughout the year. The temple is also famous for the "Daigo's Cherry Blossom Viewing" hosted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, commemorated annually with the Toyotomi Taiko Flower Viewing Procession in April.
Daigoji is a magnificent temple where history and nature harmoniously coexist. It's a must-see destination when visiting Kyoto.
