The Shimoyama Art Forest Power Plant Museum, located in Nyuzen-machi, Shimonikawa-gun, Toyama Prefecture, is a museum renovated from the former Kurobegawa Second Power Plant, built in 1925. Scheduled for demolition due to the renovation of the Kurobegawa Higashi-Aiguchi Waterway, the red-brick former power plant was graciously lent to Nyuzen town by its owner, Hokuriku Electric Power Company, and transformed into a new art center. It opened on April 15, 1995, and continues to operate today.
The interior retains as much of the power plant's original character as possible, with the water conduit utilized as exhibition space. You can enjoy contemporary art and special exhibitions while experiencing the history of the power plant.
The surrounding area is developed as "Shimoyama Art Forest," offering not only the museum but also a sculpture plaza, lawn area, observation plaza, observation tower, lodging, and studios—a perfect blend of nature and art.
A sculpture plaza and cafe are located on a plateau reached by stairs from the museum, offering a breathtaking view of the majestic Tateyama mountain range for a relaxing break.
The Shimoyama Art Forest Power Plant Museum is a highly recommended tourist spot in Toyama Prefecture, where art, history, and nature come together. Be sure to visit!
