Witness breathtaking views of dramatic cliffs and strangely shaped rocks! Also famous as the birthplace of the 'tarai-bune' (tub boat).
Located in the southwestern part of Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, Ogi Coast is a coastal scenic area designated as a national natural monument and place of scenic beauty. The approximately 8-kilometer coastline is a continuous series of sea cliffs composed of basalt and andesite, offering a diverse and breathtaking landscape. The dynamic scenery of steep cliffs and towering oddly shaped rocks will leave a lasting impression. The area known as Nansen-kyo gorge, in particular, showcases dark brown andesite rocks creating a stunning contrast with the sea and surrounding greenery, captivating countless literary figures throughout history. Even Yosano Tekkan, a renowned poet, composed a poem praising this breathtaking scenery. Beyond Nansen-kyo, Ogi Coast boasts numerous other attractions, including Yajima-Kejima Island, where the contrast between lush old pine trees on the rocky reefs and a crimson arched bridge is particularly beautiful; the rock formation "Sahachimonji" (left eight characters), said to have been inscribed by Kobo Daishi; the Koto-ura Cave, a natural rock arch; and Sawazaki, a rare pillow lava plateau. The Shukunegi village, which thrived as a center for shipbuilders, is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, offering a glimpse into the area's rich history. The Ogi Coast is also famously known as the birthplace of the 'tarai-bune' (tub boat). These boats, initially modified from halved miso barrels in the early Meiji period, were ideally suited for fishing in this area characterized by many reefs and shallows. Even today, 'iso-negi' fishing—harvesting seaweed, abalone, and turban shells using 'tarai-bune'—is still practiced. Experiencing a ride in a 'tarai-bune' is a popular activity among tourists. Ogi Coast is a captivating place where nature, history, and culture converge. Enjoy various activities such as admiring the magnificent scenery, riding in a 'tarai-bune', or exploring Shukunegi village. Visit Ogi Coast and experience the charm of Sado Island.
