A primeval forest in the depths of the northern mountains of Sado Island. The breathtaking scenery of uniquely shaped giant trees, sculpted by strong winds and mist, truly lets you feel the power of nature.
Ishina Natural Cedars, a primeval forest deep in the northern mountains of Sado Island, boasts a breathtaking view of uniquely shaped giant cedar trees sculpted by strong winds and mist. Their forms resemble works of art created by nature itself. Uniquely named trees from a public contest, such as the 'Zouge-sugi' (Ivory Cedar) and 'Hagoromo-sugi' (Feather Robe Cedar), stand tall as if alive, captivating visitors. Many of these giants are over 300 years old, radiating strength and power. The Ishina Natural Cedars walking path is a relatively short 650 meters, making it easy for those less confident in their physical abilities to enjoy. Along the path, you'll find not only giant cedar trees but also various other plants, allowing you to experience the beauty of the changing seasons. Nestled within the primeval forest is Ishina 清水寺 (Shimizu-dera Temple), an ancient temple founded in 807 (according to legend), where you can see the Shaka-do hall built by Mokujiki Kodo and a giant ginkgo tree, a designated city natural monument. Ishina Natural Cedars is a recommended spot to fully experience the rich nature of Sado Island. Why not refresh your body and mind, taking in the tranquility of the primeval forest and the strength of the giant trees? *Note: From Spring 2024, construction is planned on the Ishina side of the Ishina Wakigi Line, making it impassable for about three years. Therefore, access to the O Sado Ishina Natural Cedars will only be possible from the Wakigi side.
