Surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, Yatsuzuka Dam offers stunning views and is near many other attractions, including the Azuma Gorge (known as the Kanto region's Yamame-kei) and the historic Kawarayu Onsen hot spring. The panoramic vista from the dam is truly awe-inspiring!
Yatsuzuka Dam is a gravity-type concrete dam constructed on the Agatsuma River, part of the Tone River system. Its purposes are flood control for the Tone River's lower reaches, including the metropolitan area, supplying water for domestic and industrial use, maintaining and improving the normal functions of the Agatsuma River's flow, and power generation by Gunma Prefecture. Completed in March 2020, it represents the culmination of a long project that began with surveys in 1952. The magnificent view from the dam is breathtaking, and the surrounding area boasts a wealth of historical and natural attractions, including the Azuma Gorge (often called the Kanto region's Yamame-kei), and Kawarayu Onsen, a hot spring reputedly discovered around 800 years ago by Minamoto no Yoritomo. While Yatsuzuka Dam is located in Naganohara-machi, Agatsuma-gun, Gunma Prefecture, the dam's construction necessitated the relocation of residents from the flooded areas. New settlements were established on both the right (Kawarayu district) and left (Kawarahata district) banks of the reservoir, leading to the construction of the Yatsuzuka Ohashi bridge, now a popular viewpoint offering spectacular views of the dam and lake. The area around Yatsuzuka Dam offers numerous activities, including dam tours, nature walks, and onsen experiences. It's a destination well worth exploring.
