A site of fierce battles in the Satsuma Rebellion, where Saigo Takamori held his final war council.
The Saigo Takamori's Last Stand Museum marks the site where Saigo Takamori, defeated in the Satsuma Rebellion, held his final war council. The surrounding area is famous as the location of the pivotal Battle of Wadagoe and the Kawai-dake breakout, a turning point in the war comparable to the Battle of Tabaruzaka. Organized Satsuma army combat ceased after this, shifting the stage to Shiroyama, the final scene of the Satsuma Rebellion. Inside the museum, life-sized wax figures realistically recreate the final war council. A replica of Saigo's army general's uniform is also displayed, along with the location where it was reportedly burned. Other exhibits include Saigo's death poem (seven-character quatrain), various documents, his water bottle, pillow, and more. Despite its small size, the museum offers a compelling experience. It's highly recommended for those interested in the Satsuma Rebellion or history buffs. Consider visiting Shiroyama in Kagoshima City, where Saigo Takamori committed seppuku, as well.
