A foreign residence registered as a World Heritage site as a Meiji-era industrial heritage. Its attractive blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles is a highlight.
Overview
The Former Kagoshima Spinning Mill Engineer's Residence is one of Japan's earliest examples of Western-style wooden architecture and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Built in 1867 (Keio 3), it served as the residence for British engineers who provided technical guidance for Kagoshima Spinning Mill, Japan's first Western-style spinning mill.
This building is characterized by its eclectic architectural style, incorporating a colonial-style veranda and elements of traditional Japanese architecture. Valuable documents and photographs showcasing the technology and culture of the time are exhibited, offering a glimpse into the Meiji Restoration's industrial revolution.
In 2015, it was registered as a component of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron, Steel, Coal and Shipbuilding" World Heritage site. The Former Kagoshima Spinning Mill Engineer's Residence, a World Heritage site, provides a valuable opportunity to experience history and culture. We encourage you to visit.
