Overview

Kasuga Village is located in the northwestern part of Hirado Island, Nagasaki Prefecture. It vividly preserves the history and culture of the Kakure Kirishitan era from 400 years ago. The village features breathtakingly beautiful terraced rice paddies surrounded by mountains. These paddies utilize the clear water of the Kasuga River, flowing from Mount Ama, and are constructed using andesite rock from the same mountain. The sophisticated stonework is believed to be the work of stonemasons from Ikitsuki Island. A distinctive feature is the continuous landscape of rice terraces extending from sea level to an altitude of approximately 150 meters within a narrow valley. Kasuga Village was once isolated from the outside world, making it an ideal hiding place for Kakure Kirishitan. The villagers have carefully preserved their traditional culture cultivated over many years. Their faith is a unique blend of Buddhism, Shinto, and indigenous folk beliefs. Mountains such as Maruo-yama and Mount Ama, which served as focal points of faith for the Kakure Kirishitan, remain in the village, reflecting a strong element of nature worship. Visiting Kasuga Village offers a chance to experience the beauty of Japanese history, culture, and nature, providing a peaceful and restorative experience. Rice harvested from the terraced paddies is sold as "Kasuga no Tanada Rice." In 2017, it was even presented as a gift to Pope Francis at the Vatican. Kasuga Village is a beautiful place where history, culture, and nature harmonize, making it a worthwhile destination.
