A red-brick church designated as a National Important Cultural Property, standing majestically overlooking the beautiful sea of the Goto Islands.
Aosasaka Ura Tenshudou is a Catholic church located in Shinkamigoto-cho, Minamimatsuura-gun, Nagasaki Prefecture, and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Situated in the northern part of Nakadori Island in the Goto Islands, this red-brick church facing the sea exudes both strength and beauty. Designed by Yosuke Tetsukawa, who designed numerous churches, it is known as a representative example of early Japanese brick Christian architecture. Aosasaka Ura Tenshudou's first church was built in 1878 (Meiji 11) by believers who had relocated from the Outer Sea region during the Edo period and had returned to Catholicism after being Kakure Kirishitan (hidden Christians). In 1900 (Meiji 33), the Aosasaka Ura sub-parish was established, and the current building, the third church, was completed in 1910 (Meiji 43). The church's floor plan is a three-aisled basilica style. The interior is divided into a nave and side aisles by wooden columns, and the ceiling is a ribbed vault. The architectural style is a fusion of the technology and aesthetics of the time. The exterior walls are made of British bricks, and the facade features a rose window and tall arches. The interior is divided into a nave and two side aisles by arcades, and the ceiling is a four-part ribbed vault. Stained glass windows are installed in the side aisles, creating a beautiful space filled with light. Aosasaka Ura Tenshudou is a tourist spot where you can experience the beautiful nature and history of the Goto Islands. Why not spend some relaxing time here, admiring the church architecture, offering a silent prayer, or simply taking in the atmosphere?
