The Hakodate Orthodox Church was originally built in 1860 as a chapel attached to the Russian Consulate. It later became a center for the propagation of Japanese Orthodoxy. The current church building was reconstructed in 1916. Its beautiful Russian Orthodox architectural style is a precious asset to Hakodate's cityscape. The white stucco walls, blue roof, and distinctive cross are striking. Photography is prohibited inside the church, but the atmosphere is quiet and sacred, offering a peaceful experience.
