A breathtaking slope offering panoramic views of Hakodate Port!
Hachiman-zaka is a beautiful slope in Hakodate's Motomachi district, providing stunning panoramic views of Hakodate Port. Its name comes from the Hakodate Hachiman Shrine that once stood at the top of the hill. Frequently used as a filming location for movies and dramas, Hachiman-zaka is particularly breathtaking at sunset, when the orange sky, the sea, and the Western-style buildings lining the slope create an unforgettable vista. From the top, you can see Mount Hakodate, Hakodate Port, and even the islands of the Tsugaru Strait in the distance, enjoying a majestic panorama. The area surrounding Hachiman-zaka is full of charming spots, including historical buildings, museums, and cafes. For example, the former Hakodate Ward Assembly Hall, a historical building constructed during the Meiji era and designated as an Important Cultural Property, stands midway up the slope. At the bottom of the slope lies the red brick warehouses, a symbol of Hakodate Port, which opened in the Meiji era. Hachiman-zaka is an absolute must-see on any Hakodate itinerary. Take your time strolling along the slope and savor the beauty of Hakodate.
