A peaceful and tranquil shrine nestled in the heart of Numazu. In spring, it explodes with cherry blossoms, creating a stunning landscape.
Numazu Hie Jinja Shrine is a shrine located in Hiramachi, Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. To distinguish it from other Hie Jinja shrines, it's often referred to as Numazu Hie Jinja Shrine, clearly incorporating the place name. Founded in 1096 (永長元年 - Eicho Gannen), this historic shrine sits on land that was once part of the "Ooka Shoen," an estate belonging to the regent Fujiwara no Moromichi. The grounds include the main hall (honden), offering hall (haiden), a hand-washing basin (temizuya), monuments, a Matsuo Basho haiku stone monument, a sacred camphor tree (goshujinoki), the Miharu Takizakura cherry tree and other cherry blossoms known as "Sanno-san's cherries," and a large torii gate and stone torii gate at the approach. It also houses subsidiary shrines such as Takao-yama Homimi Jinja Shrine (dedicated to Ukanomitama-no-mikoto, the god of rice) and Hie Tenmangu Shrine (dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the god of scholarship). Numazu Hie Jinja Shrine offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, providing a calming sanctuary for visitors. In spring, the grounds are ablaze with cherry blossoms, creating a magical scene. The shrine boasts many highlights, including historically significant shrine buildings and majestic sacred trees. Affectionately called "Sanno-san" by locals, its friendly and warm atmosphere is another of its charms. Numazu Hie Jinja Shrine is a place of peace where history and nature harmonize.
