The former brick manufacturing facility of Nippon Rengaseizo Co., Ltd. is a historic building that significantly contributed to Japan's modernization. Established in the Meiji era, the site preserves a Hoffman kiln offering a glimpse into the brick-making process, along with the original office and substation. Designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, the site showcases brick buildings, machinery, and documents that illuminate Japan's modern industrial history. The Hoffman kiln, a cutting-edge technology of its time, allowed for continuous brick firing. The facility also includes exhibits on the history of bricks, the manufacturing process, and the lives of workers. Events such as brick-making workshops and pottery experiences are also held. Be sure to visit when in Fukaya City! Nippon Rengaseizo Co., Ltd. manufactured bricks for approximately 120 years, from 1888 to 2006, at the behest of the Meiji government. The bricks produced were used in iconic structures such as the Marunouchi Main Building of Tokyo Station and the former Eastern Palace (currently the Akasaka Palace State Guest House). Four structures are designated as Important Cultural Properties: Kiln No. 6, the former office, the former substation, and the Bizen-kyo Iron Bridge (a private railway line). The Hoffman kiln represents cutting-edge technology of its time, enabling continuous brick firing. Witnessing the brick-making process provides a tangible understanding of the advanced technology of the era. The former office, a brick building from the Meiji period, displays precious materials illustrating the office's past. Similarly, the former substation showcases materials reflecting the electrical conversion methods of that time. The Bizen-kyo Iron Bridge, also built of brick, offers insights into the railway system of the era. These structures hold immense value as part of Japan's modernization heritage.
