Sakitama Kofun Park, located in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture, is a vast park centered around the Sakitama Kofun Tumulus Cluster, a designated Special Historic Site of Japan. The park features valuable kofun, including Marubosayama Kofun, one of Japan's largest circular burial mounds, and Inariyama Kofun, where the National Treasure, a gold-inlaid iron sword, was excavated. The Sakitama Kofun Tumulus Cluster, consisting of nine large kofun built between the late 5th and 7th centuries, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Japanese society.
Marubosayama Kofun is a colossal circular mound, 19 meters high and 280 meters in circumference, a striking landmark within the park. While the stairs to the summit are steep in parts, the view from the top encompasses the entire park and distant mountains, allowing visitors to imagine the magnificent vista that would have greeted the people of antiquity.
Inariyama Kofun yielded the National Treasure gold-inlaid iron sword and gilt bronze horse trappings, invaluable artifacts for understanding ancient Japanese history. These unearthed treasures are showcased at the Sakitama Historical Site Museum, offering a window into the advanced culture and technology of the Kofun period.
Beyond the kofun, the park boasts lush natural areas such as ancient grasslands and forests. Well-maintained walking paths invite exploration and appreciation of the changing seasons. Amenities for families include children's playgrounds and barbecue areas.
Sakitama Kofun Park is a captivating destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Come and experience the history and romance of ancient Japan.
