A vast park where you can experience Meiji-era history and nature. Features Tokugawa Akitake's villa, gardens, a historical museum, and a teahouse.
Overview
Todogaoka Historical Park is a tranquil and beautiful park harmonizing Meiji-era history and nature. The Todotei residence, built by Tokugawa Akitake, the last lord of the Mito Domain, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and offers a glimpse into the lives of people during that era. Completed in 1884 (Meiji 17), its construction took approximately two years. Comprising nine buildings with 23 rooms, it's a precious historical site showcasing the lifestyle of the upper class at that time.
The garden is a rare example of a Western-style garden in Japan, incorporating elements of Western garden design that Tokugawa Akitake encountered during his studies in France. Its expansive lawns and unique landscape, featuring the Podocarpus macrophyllus as a symbolic tree, are particularly captivating.
The Todotei Historical Museum is a museum exhibiting materials related to the history of the Todotei residence and garden, as well as information on Tokugawa Akitake and Tokugawa Yoshinobu (Keiki). Through precious photographs, documents, and artifacts, you can learn about the turbulent era from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period.
The Sho-un-tei teahouse was built by Matsudo City to commemorate its 35th anniversary of becoming a city. Built in a traditional teahouse architectural style, it offers the opportunity to enjoy a traditional tea ceremony.
Todogaoka Historical Park is a recommended sightseeing spot where you can fully enjoy history and nature. Be sure to visit!
