Ikaho Shrine, located in Ikaho Onsen, Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture, is a historic shrine with a long history of being revered by the people as an Enkyoshiki-naisha (shrine listed in the Engishiki, an ancient Japanese document). Located at the top of the stone staircase near the source of Ikaho Onsen's hot springs, it's known as the god of hot springs, medicine, and prosperous business. The name "Ikaho" is ancient, appearing in the Manyoshu (a collection of classical Japanese poetry). It is said to be derived from "Ikatsuho" (a rugged peak) or "Ikatsuchinoho" (peak of thunder), ancient names referring to Mount Haruna, particularly Mount Mizusawa. Originally, Ikaho Shrine seems to have been located elsewhere, with Mount Mizusawa as the object of worship. According to Heian period records, it was conferred the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade in 839 AD (Jogan 6), Junior Fourth Rank, Upper Grade in 880 AD (Gange 4), and around 1030 AD (Chogen 3), it was promoted to the Senior First Rank, eventually becoming one of the three major shrines in Kozuke Province. It later declined, but eventually moved to its present location near the source of the Ikaho hot springs, becoming the guardian deity of the onsen. The current enshrined deities are Ōnamuchi-no-mikoto and Sukunahikona-no-mikoto, gods of hot springs, medicine, and prosperous business; these deities were likely enshrined after the shrine's relocation near the hot spring source. These two gods are also said to be gods who grant children. Because the shrine was elevated to Myōjin Taisha (a designated shrine) on September 19th, 835 AD, the annual festival is held on this date. A 15-minute walk from Ikaho Onsen's stone staircase street will lead you to Ikaho Shrine. Enjoy browsing the souvenir shops and restaurants along the stone steps, but the magnificent view that awaits you at the top is truly exceptional. Overlooking the onsen town and distant mountains, you can refresh your mind and body in the tranquil atmosphere. The grounds are filled with historical buildings and lush trees, creating a calm and serene environment. If you're not up for climbing the stone steps, you can also access the shrine by car. Ikaho Shrine is a symbolic landmark of Ikaho Onsen, a power spot surrounded by history and nature, beloved by many.
