Experience the sacred atmosphere of this historic shrine on Shikanoshima Island, overlooking the magnificent Genkai Sea.
Shikaumi Jinja Shrine, located on Shikanoshima Island in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, enshrines the three Watasumigami, sea gods who emerged from Izanagi-no-mikoto's ritual purification. Since ancient times, it has been called the "head shrine of the sea gods" and the "Dragon's Capital," deeply revered as the guardian shrine of Hakata Bay, a vital maritime transport hub overlooking the Genkai Sea. Shikanoshima Island has long been a center for prayers for safe sea voyages, and Shikaumi Jinja Shrine has flourished as the heart of this faith. The shrine offers breathtaking panoramic views of the majestic Genkai Sea, captivating visitors with its stunning scenery. Shikaumi Jinja Shrine also houses numerous precious cultural assets, including the "Tokinsho" (gold-plated bell), designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The "Tokinsho," a Korean bell also known as a bon-sho, is believed to have been made in the early 13th century during the Goryeo period. It is characterized by a large dragon head at the top relative to the bell body. The upper and lower bands are adorned with peony and arabesque patterns, and four sixteen-petaled lotus flower designs serve as striking pads slightly above the lower band. Four seated Buddha statues are cast into the bell body, with two heavenly beings (protective deities in Buddhism) below each. Shikaumi Jinja Shrine is a renowned power spot surrounded by history and nature. A variety of festivals are held throughout the year, brimming with lively energy. The "Goshin-ko-sai" festival, held every two years, is especially noteworthy, designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukuoka Prefecture. The procession of portable shrines at night to Tonomiya is truly awe-inspiring. During the Goshin-ko-sai festival, traditional performances based on the shrine's origins, such as the "Dragon Dance," "Eight Maidens' Dance," and "Kagura Dance," are offered. Shikaumi Jinja Shrine is a highly recommended sightseeing spot where you can experience history, nature, and culture.
