Tenkajō Park, located on a 120m-high hill in Uchyama, Takaoka-machi, Miyazaki City, is a park that combines abundant nature, history, and sports facilities.
In spring, approximately 1,200 cherry trees, including Someiyoshino and Yamazakura varieties, burst into bloom, painting the park in shades of pink. Around 50,000 azaleas also flourish, creating a truly spectacular sight. The "Tenkajō Kaimon Sakura Matsuri" (Tenkajō Gate Opening Cherry Blossom Festival) is held in mid-to-late March each year, featuring stage shows and lively food stalls. Nighttime illuminations add a magical touch to the cherry blossom viewing experience.
The park features a spacious lawn ideal for picnics and ball games, making it perfect for family fun. It also boasts comprehensive sports facilities, including a baseball field and gymnasium, attracting sports enthusiasts.
History buffs will appreciate the Tenkajō Historical and Folk Museum within the park. Situated on the former site of Tenkajō Castle, it offers insights into the history and culture of Takaoka. Tenkajō Castle was built in 1600 by Shimazu Yoshihiro, the 17th head of the Satsuma Shimazu clan, as a defense against the Hyūga Itō clan. The museum displays materials and artifacts related to Tenkajō Castle, providing a glimpse into its past.
Tenkajō Park offers a multifaceted experience combining nature, history, and sports. Be sure to visit when you're in Miyazaki City.
