Kamataike Pond is a tranquil pond located at an elevation of 1,190m in Otari Village, Kitaazumi District, Nagano Prefecture. Surrounded by a beech forest, its stillness is remarkable. The reflection of the autumn leaves on the surface is breathtakingly beautiful, making it a popular spot for photographers. The morning light and mist add a mystical quality, especially during sunrise. A roughly 2km walking trail circles the pond, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The pond's name, Kamataike (Sickle Pond), is derived from its shape, resembling a sickle used for harvesting. Nearby is a smaller pond called Nataike. Local legends surround these ponds. One story tells of a large male and female serpent inhabiting a pond called Mukaiike, located on the border between Shinano and Echigo provinces. These serpents often caused mischief, so the villagers decided to eliminate them by dumping night soil into the pond. The male serpent, in agony, escaped to a woodshed. The villagers set the shed ablaze and killed the serpent. The female serpent, grief-stricken, fled towards Lake Nojiri, her tears forming the ponds that now exist: Inkyoike, Nataike, and Kamataike. When visiting Kamataike, take some time to appreciate the surrounding natural beauty. The majestic mountains, including Mount Amakazari and Mount Norikura, will create lasting memories.
