A museum where you can experience Nara's rich history and culture.
Overview
The Nara Prefectural Museum of Art is located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. It opened in 1973, based on a collection of early modern Japanese paintings, ukiyo-e woodblock prints, and art crafts donated by Kanpo Yoshikawa, a researcher of social customs and a Japanese painter. Subsequently, it has also acquired the Tetsuji Yura collection (also featuring early modern Japanese paintings and ukiyo-e), the collection of works by Kenkichi Tomomoto, a Nara-born craftsman, and the collection of Ohashi Kako Kogyo Co., Ltd. president, Goro Ohashi, a collector of postwar contemporary Japanese art, among others. As of 2018, the museum possesses over 4,100 pieces.
The museum features permanent exhibitions focusing primarily on early modern Japanese paintings, ukiyo-e, and art crafts, as well as special exhibitions showcasing various genres of art, including contemporary art. The museum also offers a library, a bookshop, and a comfortable rest area, allowing visitors to leisurely appreciate the artwork.
