Overview

Nippara Caves, located in Nippara, Okutama-machi, Nishi-Tama-gun, Tokyo, is a Tokyo Metropolitan designated natural monument. With a total length of 1270 meters and a vertical drop of 134 meters, it ranks among the largest cave systems in the Kanto region, rivaling Takidani-do in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture. Historically significant for its role in mountain worship, it now thrives as a popular tourist destination. Nestled in a steep valley carved by the Ogawatani River, a tributary of the Nippara River, the caves maintain a consistently cool temperature of 11 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year – pleasantly cool in summer and surprisingly warm in winter. Inside, you'll discover a breathtaking array of stalactites, stalagmites, and columns of various sizes, their mystical beauty captivating all who enter. The newer sections of the cave are particularly impressive, showcasing a dense cluster of magnificently grown stalagmites and columns, creating an otherworldly scene. Other highlights include the seemingly endless 'tenjou shirezu' (ceiling unknown) chamber with its high ceiling and immense depth, and the 'gama-iwa' rock formation, reminiscent of a giant frog. These caves, formed over eons, are a testament to the artistry of nature. Nippara Caves offer a precious opportunity to experience the grandeur and mystery of nature, providing a perfect escape from the city's hustle and bustle for those seeking tranquility.
