Nagato-Yumoto Onsen, one of Yamaguchi Prefecture's representative hot springs, the "Bōchō Shiyū". Soothe your daily stresses in this historic onsen town!
Nagato-Yumoto Onsen is a hot spring resort located in northern Yamaguchi Prefecture. It's considered one of the four prominent hot springs of Yamaguchi, known as "Bōchō Shiyū", and is famous for its historic onsen town. Its opening dates back to 1427 during the Muromachi period, reportedly discovered by a priest of Dainei-ji Temple following an oracle from the deity Sumyoshi Daimyōjin. Even Edo-era Chōshū feudal lords are said to have visited for therapeutic bathing. The hot springs are alkaline simple springs, gentle on the skin and reputed for their beautifying effects. In addition to Ryokans and hotels, the onsen town boasts foot baths and public bathhouses, making it enjoyable even for a day trip. The public bathhouse "On-yu" is notable for its previous large neon sign reading "Yumoto Onsen" on a tiled roof (before its renovation). It reopened in March 2020 with a new bathhouse offering a view of the hot springs flowing from the bedrock. The surrounding area offers many attractions, including abundant nature and historical structures. For instance, Nagato Gorge, a designated national scenic spot, allows you to appreciate beautiful nature. Also, the ruins of Hagi Castle, built by the Mōri clan, offer a glimpse into history. Nagato-Yumoto Onsen is a hot spring resort where you can relax both mentally and physically, surrounded by history and nature. Be sure to visit!
