Overview

Nagato Gorge is a 12-kilometer-long gorge located in Ato, Yamaguchi City, and Kawakami, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is designated as a place of scenic beauty by the national government. Located in the upper reaches of the Abu River, it is characterized by cliffs formed from Cretaceous rhyolitic tuff and dacite lava. The gorge features a variety of landscapes, including oddly shaped rocks, waterfalls, and deep pools. Its beauty sometimes earns it a place among Japan's 'Five Great Gorges'. The name Nagato Gorge was given by Kitai Takashima, a painter and geologist from Hagi. The poet Chuya Nakahara is also known to have praised this place. Nagato Gorge offers beautiful scenery throughout the year: cherry blossoms in spring, a cool retreat in summer, and vibrant autumn foliage. The autumn leaves are particularly stunning, with their reflections on the water creating a breathtaking view. A 5.5-kilometer sightseeing walking path is maintained from Ryugu-buchi to the Michinoeki Nagato Gorge roadside station, perfect for hiking and trekking. Along the path, you'll find scenic spots such as the Shinshin Bridge, Ryugu-buchi, Otarabuchi, and Kurayami-buchi, allowing for a leisurely stroll. Nagato Gorge is a nature-rich area where you can relax and unwind amidst the magnificent scenery and fresh air. When visiting Yamaguchi Prefecture, be sure to visit Nagato Gorge.
