Zao Onsen Ski Resort is located in Zao Onsen, Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. Considered a sacred ground in Japanese skiing, it's one of the leading ski resorts in the Tohoku region, alongside Appi Kogen. Boasting the largest area of any single ski resort in Japan, its sprawling grounds at the foot of Mount Zao offer a wide variety of diverse courses, attracting numerous skiers and snowboarders during the winter season.
The resort's biggest draw is undoubtedly its world-famous ice monsters (juhyo). From January to February, the mountaintop area is blanketed with these breathtaking formations – ice crystals accumulating on trees, creating a magical and enchanting landscape. At night, the juhyo are illuminated, offering a different, equally magical spectacle.
The resort caters to all skill levels, with slopes ranging from gentle inclines to challenging steeps. Furthermore, the resort offers a variety of amenities, including on-site hot springs (onsen), restaurants, and accommodation options, ensuring a full day of enjoyment.
Zao Onsen Ski Resort is truly a ski resort experience, offering not only skiing and snowboarding but also the chance to relax in onsen and appreciate the stunning scenery. Come and experience it for yourself!
