Overview

Daiitoku-ji Temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple nestled in the Ushikidayama mountains of Kishiwada City, Osaka Prefecture, and is renowned for its stunning autumn foliage. Reverently regarded as a sacred site of Katsuragi Shugendo since ancient times, Daiitoku-ji Temple is said to have been founded by En no Gyoja (also known as Yakuo Kaku), the founder of Shugendo. The temple grounds are home to numerous historical structures, including a national Important Cultural Property: the multi-storied pagoda, as well as the main hall, the Kannon hall, and a bell tower. The multi-storied pagoda, rebuilt during the Muromachi period, bears an inscription dated 1515 (Eisei 12) on its first-floor wall panels. The main hall faces the waterfall to the south, while the multi-storied pagoda is positioned to the north, behind the main hall. This unusual arrangement, with the pagoda situated behind the main hall, is a unique characteristic of Daiitoku-ji Temple. Daiitoku-ji Temple also features four magnificent waterfalls: the "Ichi-no-taki" (10m drop), "Ni-no-taki" (5m drop), "San-no-taki" (10m drop), and "Nishiryu-no-taki" (7.8m drop). These waterfalls contribute to the breathtaking valley scenery, offering a serene and peaceful atmosphere for visitors. While Daiitoku-ji Temple offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, the autumn foliage season is particularly spectacular. The entire mountainside is ablaze with fiery reds and golden yellows, creating a breathtakingly beautiful landscape. The temple, adorned with autumn colors, presents a truly picturesque scene, captivating numerous visitors. Daiitoku-ji Temple provides a tranquil space surrounded by nature and history. Take a moment to find peace amidst the ancient trees and the gentle sound of the waterfalls, and refresh your mind and body. We highly encourage you to visit and experience the charm of Daiitoku-ji Temple for yourself.
