Rengehoji Temple is a mountain temple in Myoko City, nestled on the mid-slope of Mt. Myoko at an elevation of 800 meters. Legend says it was founded in 807 AD (Daido 2) by Kobo Daishi Kukai, and it has been a place of faith for centuries. The temple sits in a tranquil space surrounded by breathtaking nature, offering visitors a sense of peace and serenity. Rengehoji Temple features various structures, including the main hall, bell tower, and kuri (temple kitchen), each steeped in history. The main hall houses a Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) as its principal image, its imposing presence truly awe-inspiring. From the bell tower, you can enjoy panoramic views of the majestic Mt. Myoko, a truly uplifting experience. The kuri, once the living quarters of the monks, now serves as a tea room and rest area. The temple is approximately a 30-minute drive from Myoko Kogen Station. However, access by car is difficult in winter due to heavy snowfall. Bus services are also available from Myoko Kogen Station, providing an alternative mode of transportation. It’s also an attractive place for those interested in history and culture. We highly recommend a visit.
