Overview

Himisaki Shrine, affectionately called "Misaki-san" by locals, is a historic shrine located in Himisaki, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. Reverently regarded as the "ancestral deity" of Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, its twelve shrine buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Situated at the western tip of the Shimane Peninsula, this shrine offers unparalleled views of the Sea of Japan. Its granite torii gate and vibrant vermilion main gate create a majestic atmosphere against the backdrop of a pine forest. Himisaki Shrine consists of two shrines: the Lower Shrine, "Hishizumi no Miya," dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, and the Upper Shrine, "Kamino Miya," dedicated to Susanoo no Mikoto. Recorded in the "Izumo no Kuni Fudoki" (Izumo Province Fudoki), this historic shrine's current buildings were constructed during the Edo period under the orders of Tokugawa Iemitsu. Built in the Gongen-zukuri style, reminiscent of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the shrine buildings are adorned with beautiful carvings, including the iconic "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" monkey carvings. The shrine's sand omamori (sacred charm) is also very popular, believed to offer special blessings. Many visitors are deeply moved by the beauty and solemnity of the shrine buildings, and consistently praise the magnificent scenery with the Sea of Japan as a backdrop. The detailed explanations provided regarding the origin and use of the sand omamori are also highly appreciated. Many also visit nearby Fushima Island (keishima), Kakuregaoka, and Tsukuyomi Shrine as part of their pilgrimage. While access might be slightly inconvenient, and there are limited dining options nearby, the tranquil and peaceful atmosphere is a significant draw. Himisaki Shrine is highly recommended as a must-visit destination during a trip to Izumo, captivating visitors with its historical significance, architectural beauty, and harmonious blend with the surrounding natural landscape.
