Overview

Myogi Shrine, located in Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, is a sacred place where history and nature blend seamlessly, nestled on the mid-slope of Mount Myogi (1,104m). Its history stretches back to the year 724 (the first year of the Jinki era), boasting approximately 1300 years of history. During the Edo period, the shrine's buildings were rebuilt under the protection of the Tokugawa shogunate, resulting in its current magnificent form. The main hall and the haiden (worship hall) were rebuilt in the Edo period, featuring exquisite carvings and colorful decorations. Specifically, the honden (main hall) has a complex structure: three ken (bay) in width and two ken in depth, single-storied with an irimoya-zukuri (hipped and gabled) roof. The heiden (offering hall) is three ken wide, one ken deep, single-storied, with a ryogeshita-zukuri (double-eaved) roof. The haiden (worship hall) is three ken wide, two ken deep, single-storied, with a irimoya-zukuri roof, a chigiri-hafu (decorative gable) on the front, a one-ken-wide hiyoku (porch), and a noki-tohafu (eave-gable). The Karamon gate, leading to the main hall, also features elaborate carvings, its beauty truly breathtaking. The Zuishinmon gate, standing at the shrine's entrance, welcomes visitors with powerful guardian deity statues. Myogi Shrine is also a popular base for mountain climbing and hiking. You can visit the shrine while enjoying the magnificent scenery of Mount Myogi and experience the beauty of nature throughout the four seasons. Cherry blossoms abound in spring, autumn leaves paint the mountain in vibrant colors, and the winter snow creates a stunning landscape; it offers a different charm throughout the year. Myogi Shrine is a sacred place where history and nature intertwine, cherished by many. Its majestic atmosphere, beautiful architecture, and abundant nature captivate all who visit. We highly recommend a visit.
