Kusaka Genzui was born in 1839 (Tenpo 10) as the eldest son of a samurai family in the Hagi domain. Intelligent from a young age, he entered Shokasonjuku, established by Yoshida Shoin, in 1855 (Ansei 2). At Shokasonjuku, he studied alongside Takasugi Shinsaku, Ito Hirobumi, Yoshida Tominomaro, and others, passionately discussing the future of Japan. Kusaka Genzui was wounded in the Hamagurimon Incident on August 18, 1864 (Genji 1), and died by seppuku (ritual suicide) at the young age of 25. Kusaka Genzui's birthplace is located in Heiankomachi, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and a stone monument still stands there today. The monument was erected to commemorate Kusaka Genzui's achievements and to pass down his legacy to future generations. Kusaka Genzui left a significant mark on Japanese history.
